Mervin Charles LEVENTON, MM2-Machinist
LEVENTON, Mervin C
Machinists Mate Second Class Leventon was born on May 25, 1922, in Grizzley Flats, California to Charles Henry Leventon and Lucy Evangeline Martin. He was the youngest of nine children, having four brothers and four sisters. There was 23 years between Mervin and his eldest sibling. Mervin graduated from El Dorado County High School (ECHS) in Placerville, California in 1938. On April 19, 1942, he married Sally Bassett and enlisted in the US Navy on September 29, 1942. He went aboard USS Indianapolis on May 5, 1943.
The family was advised that Mervin was not among the survivors and was presumed to have been lost in the sinking of Indianapolis in the Asiatic-Pacific. His last leave at home was in the latter part of May 1945, and at that time he wore the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon with nine campaign stars. Mervin was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Leventon of Grizzley Flats, California. He was the brother of Mrs. Mildred Becher of Berkeley, Mrs. Eva Parker of El Dorado, Mrs. Hazel Rupley of Susanville, Mrs. Edith Becker of Sacramento, Harry Leventon of Sacramento, and Glen and Gene Leventon of Shingle Springs. He was 23 years old at the time of the sinking. He was survived by his wife, Sally, his two year old daughter Juanita Lou, and his infant son Mervin Leroy - two children who would grow up without their father.
