He received his Basic Boot Camp Training at USNTC (United States Naval Training Center), Great Lakes, Illinois. He went aboard USS Indianapolis on April 25, 1944.
Miller was from the Knoxville, Tennessee area. He served on Indianapolis with four other men who all lost their lives as a result of the July 30, 1945 sinking of the ship.
The five Knoxville area men who were Lost at Sea were:
