Seaman First Class Fleischauer was born on September 26, 1922 at Exeter, Nebraska to William and Clara (Laufman) Fleischauer. He spent his youth in eastern Nebraska and graduated from Friend High School (with honors) in 1940.
He then enrolled in the University of Nebraska and enlisted in the US Naval Reserves. Donald remained at the University of Nebraska until he was called to active duty in July 1943. He was then assigned to several stateside units until his 1945 assignment on USS Indianapolis. He was a Seaman 1/c when the tragic sinking of the USS Indianapolis occurred July 30, 1945. He was survived by two brothers (Dean and Wayne) and a sister (Thelma) who at the time all resided in the state of Colorado.
