Signalman Second Class Davis was born June 8, 1921 in Savannah, Georgia and joined the Navy in November 1942.
He went to boot camp at the United States Naval Training Center in Cockspur Island Base, Savannah, GA. He was stationed at Fort Screvan, Georgia as an instructor and Anti-Submarine Patrol Duty. He was sent to San Francisco, California in January 1944 and was then assigned to Commander Fifth Fleet USS Indianapolis Flag Allowance. Participated in the following battles: Philippines, Saipan, Guam, Tinian, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. During the assault on Okinawa on March 31, 1945, the ship was hit by a Japanese suicide plane. Eddie transferred from the Flag ship to the crew of the USS Indianapolis. He returned on the ship to Mare Island, California for repairs. He returned to active duly July 1945 on a top secret mission. The ship delivered atomic bomb materials to Tinian Island for use against the Japanese Empire. On July 30, 1945, Eddie was one of the 879 members of Indianapolis crew who were lost at sea after the ship was torpedoed by an enemy submarine. Eddie was survived by a sister, Mrs. Marian Rossiter of Savannah, Georgia.
