LAMB, Robert C
Our brother, Bob, was born on July 14, 1925 to Clyde and Bessie (Turner) Lamb in Brazil, Indiana. He was their first son, one of five children.
He was a very quiet respectful boy who was kind to his brother and sisters, good to his mother and dad. He made you feel great just to be around him. As the middle sister, and being seven years younger, I can remember our walks to Forrest Park where he would watch out for me in our community swimming pool. He went to work at an early age, after school and on weekends, at our local grocery store. He had planned to learn how to manage a store and later to own one. He was a good looking, 6'2", dark haired young man who might have seemed average to some, but to our family he was "special."
Following graduation in 1943 from Brazil high School, he received his notice to report for service. He had a choice of which branch he wanted to go into at that time and decided the Navy would be the safest. Bob was convinced he would be able to also learn a trade. He was only home two times after leaving for the Great Lakes. He received further training in Minot, North Dakota and met the only girl he really ever dated. They became engaged and planned to marry following his tour of duty. Unfortunately, because of the tragedy on July 30, 1945, that plan never materialized.
Our family felt a severe loss from which some of us never recovered. My mother never did accept the fact he was gone. My dad just shut down and the rest of us was left with "what might have been" had he lived.
War is always a terrible thing but because of how it came about, after many years our family agrees that he was meant to serve and he did so honorably and without question. The world was a better place while Bob lived in it and has always been a much sadder place since he left it.
