William “Billy” Doney was born November 6, 1926 in Missouri. He was an only child and 18 years old at the time of the sinking.

The Muster Rolls for the ship list his Date Received aboard Indianapolis as December 30, 1944. He had only been aboard USS Indianapolis for about seven months. The August 2, 1945 Greenville Sun News, page 1, published this notice of William’s death.
