Robert Harold King, Seaman Second Class was born August 7, 1922, in Hawkeye, Iowa.

At the time of the sinking, Robert was 23 years old and was survived by his wife Virginia Lenore Fedeler King, age 20, and their only daughter Karen, only 4 months old. Indianapolis was attacked on Virginia's birthday, July 30th. July 1946, a year later, Virginia received a birthday card postmarked from Washington, DC mailed to the home she shared with her parents after Robert's death. The signature was a question mark (?). The family did not know anyone on the East Coast. This has always been a mystery in the family. Robert's wife Virginia passed away in 1999. His daughter Karen now has three children. Robert's grandson is a distinguished US Air Force Colonel (retired).
