Seaman Second Class Hale was born on July 30, 1923 in Gloucester, Virginia.
He went to boot camp at USNTC (United States Naval Training Center), Great Lakes, Illinois and went aboard USS Indianapolis on May 7, 1944.
He had married Helen Marie Brooks on April 13, 1942, and had two daughters, Betsy Ann Hale Stewart and Helen Franklyn Hale Fuksa.
William was Seaman 2/c USNR, Service Number 936 19 53, when (on his 22nd birthday), he was Lost At Sea on the USS Indianapolis on July 30, 1945.
