Radioman Second Class Truitt was born on September 13, 1925, in Orlando, Florida. Bobby’s family included his father, Joseph, his mother, Joyce, and a younger brother, Paul. He grew up in Jacksonville, Florida where he graduated from Arlington Elementary School and Landon High School.
He enlisted in the Navy shortly after the outbreak of the war and received his boot training at USNTC (United States Naval Training Center), Great Lakes, Illinois.
After boot camp, Bobby received his radio training at Oxford University, Miami, Ohio.
On September 1, 1943, Bobby was assigned directly to USS Indianapolis.
He participated in eight Indianapolis’ battles thereafter.
Given that Bobby lost his life with the sinking, he is still at sea with USS Indianapolis. He posthumously was awarded a Purple Heart.
