Bureau of Naval Personnel,

Dear Captain McVay:
I very much appreciated your calling me on the telephone a couple of weeks ago. The next day I received your letter from Guam and my wife and I were happy to hear your high commendation of Paul.
We now have your letter of October 4th. It was indeed thoughtful of you to send us this further word of appreciation of Paul and sympathy for us.
Perhaps you have written Paul's wife, Captain Hurt's daughter whose address is Mrs. Paul E. Ullman, 66 Kay Street, Newport, Rhode Island but nevertheless I am sending your letter along to her. She is expecting a child in the spring.
Sincerely yours,
Herbert S. Ullman

My dear Mrs. Ullmann,
Your father-in-law wrote me October 8th, that he had sent my letter concerning Paul on to your, but I want to personally tell you how fine an officer I thought your husband was and how grieved I was to learn that he was not among the survivors.
Seldom does the Captain of a large ship have the opportunities to meet his officers and their wives such as I had. I joined the ship when she was in Mare Island in November 1944, and so had about a month with them at that time, then we were back in May for battle damage repairs and again I had a chance to meet them.
As you may know, Mrs. Dortch wrote me a note shortly after I took command, asking me to keep an eye on Paul and telling me what a high typed young man she believed him to be. He was in my opinion an outstanding young officer and would have gone far in the Navy had he chosen it as his career.
The burden you carry is great indeed, but I hope the knowledge that Paul was held in such high esteem by officers and me alike will in some small way help to lighten your heart.
May I again express my deepest sympathy to you.
Please remember me to your mother and father.
Very sincerely,
CHAS. B. McVay, III
