5 October 1945

Dear Mr. Spence,

Your letter of October 2, 1945, regarding Carleton Clarke Reynolds, reached me this morning.

I have checked the service record of Reynolds, and the crew list, and find that he is carried on both as a Fireman first class. What I believe must have happened was that he wrote from Pearl Harbor, where the ship was on July 19, that he had passed the required examinations for the next higher rate, however, since men are only rated as of the first day of each month, he would not have actually been advanced to the rating of Machinist's Mate third class, until August 1st.

I am sorry that I cannot write more favorable news.

Very sincerely,

CHAS. B. MCVAY, III
