Ernst August Triemer was a graduate of Clifton Public High School in Clifton, New Jersey. He enlisted in the United States Navy in August, 1939. Ernst had a brother, Walter who served with the Infantry overseas.

The program included training opportunities at over 130 colleges and universities in the United States.
In 1942, Triemer began his V-12 training assignment at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. In 1943, he received further training at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. Finally, he graduated from Midshipman’s School at Columbia University in New York City in March 1945 and received a promotion to Ensign, United States Navy.

Upon his March graduation, Triemer married a Clifton, New Jersey nurse, Miss Virginia Simone. That spring, he was assigned to USS Indianapolis (CA-35) when it was receiving overhall at Mare Island, California.
