Project 888Machinist’s Mate Second Class Wayne Allen Stevens was born on April 16, 1923 to Mr. and Mrs. Herman Stevens. Wayne was married to Ester Mccorkle and they had one daughter, Kathy Ann Stevens. His daughter was only about 20 months in age when her father passed away. Wayne last saw his daughter in June 1945. Wayne was a graduate of the Knightstown Schools, class of 1941. Prior to his enlistment in the United State Navy, he was employed by the Perfect Circle company at Hagerstown. Wayne served on USS CA-35 for three years. A Friday, October 19, 1945 Newspaper Article in the Tri Count Banner front page was titled: Navy Secretary Writes Parents of Loss of Son. The Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal sent a letter dated October 9, 1945 to officially share his deep regrets to Steven’s parents with confirmation that their son had lost his life on 30 July 1945.
