Paul Virgil NICHOLS, MM3-Machinist

NICHOLS, Paul V

Machinist's Mate Third Class Paul Virgil Nichols was one of two Memphis, TN area young men who died as a result of the sinking of USS Indianapolis (CA-35) on July 30, 1945. The other young man from the Memphis, TN area was Eugene O'Neil. Paul had two sisters, Mrs. Doris Thomas and Mrs. Virginia Bowers. Paul had attended Bellevue Junior High School and was employed by Western Union for six years before entering the Navy in 1943. He boarded Indianapolis on May 7, 1944. At the time of his death, his wife Vera and young son George Dewey (age 3) were living near San Francisco. While he was from the Memphis, TN area, it is surmised that his wife and son were living in the San Francisco area to be near him while his ship was assigned to the Mare Island shipyard. Paul left his family at age 25 for his final cruise on Indianapolis. The above information was garnered from the contents of an August 8, 1945 article from the Memphis Commercial Appeal newspaper which was submitted to Project 888 by Paul Virgil Nichols' Grandson Travis.
